SCULPTURE LAUNCH IN UNB's MILLENNIUM SCULPTURE GARDEN
The UNB Art Centre launches Jacob's Yard: The Millenium Sculpture Garden at
UNB with the
first commissioned outdoor sculpture of the project. The work entitled La Rèponse
du
Cheval by artist Jacques Martin will be celebrated with a public reception on
October
23 from 4:30-6:30 pm with opening remarks by the Lieutenant-Governor of New
Brunswick,
the Honourable Herménégilde Chiasson.
Jacob's Yard was conceived as a project to create an outdoor gathering place
for UNB's
visitors and residents. It brings site-specific artworks by New Brunswick sculptors
into the landscape of UNB.
Jacques Martin's design for the 22.5 foot high; 3000 pound corten steel sculpture
was
selected by a special jury made up of artists, arts activists, UNB students
and faculty
from submissions made by 8 prominent New Brunswick sculptors. Based on the theme:
People Nature and Technology, Jacques Martin's solution unites these elements
through
the use of UNB's distinctive architectural style, as well as historical and
cultural
references.
Jacques Martin has been a practicing artist since the 1960s, and has participated
in
solo and group exhibitions throughout New Brunswick, as well as the Atlantic
region.
In 1993 he was selected to participate in the exhibition Contemporary Art of
Acadia at
the Université Loyola, in New Orleans and A(RT)CADIE at the Musée
Sainte-Croix,
Poitiers, France.
Since 1977, Martin has been professeur d'arts visuels at the Université
de Moncton,
Edmundston. In 1974 he received his BA from the Université de Moncton,
Collège
Saint-Louis-Maillet, Edmundston. In 1977 he received his BA in Visual Arts from
the
Université Laval, Québec, and in 1992 Maitrise en arts plastiques,
from the Université
du Québec à Montréal.
The project was funded by UNB's Long Beautification Fund with installation
assistance by
Lafarge Canada Inc. (Moncton)
